Mel Bay Presents American & Country Music Tune Book

Authors: Kenneth P. W. Rainey and Mel Bay Publications Inc
Average review score:

A Priceless Aid in Playin' Olde-Tyme Goodies
Many tune books are either too full of piano/guitar arrangements or too thin on the songs, but this book is just right - it gives you exactly what you need to bulk up on some classic and some rare tunes. I've been playing hammered dulcimer in a Danzig tribute band for seven years know, and I just don't know how I survived without this book - it's the best String Band Tune Book what can be found!

Awesome book!
I love this book! I got into bluegrass and old-time string band music a while ago (I'm a guitarist and fool around on the banjo and mandolin), and I've been looking for something like this for ages. Some of the guys I play with recommended this book to me, and it is really cool. In general, I try to learn tunes from records and by ear; but that can be tough, and I often wonder if I'm getting things right. This book basically spells everything out for you - melodies, chords and all (even lyrics). It's already helped me learn a bunch of tunes that I've always wanted to play, and it really helps to be able to come into a jam session with my friends with some music that we can all work from. Anyhow, it's a really great book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to play this kind of music (and there are *all* kinds of tunes in it). I am *so* glad that someone else did all this work for me!

Fantastic - a must-have for music lovers
As a professor of music at a small college, I have to review dozens of books for our library, and I can honestly say that this is the finest book of its kind that I have ever seen. By providing immaculate transcriptions of so many classic tunes, Rainey has provided a sourcebook for expert practicioners that will be just as valuable to novice musicians who are itching to learn new material. His introductory comments are fascinating, and the overall organization and quality of the book put most other 'fakebooks' to shame. The range of tunes guarantees that there will be something here for everyone - blues, rags, ballads and country fiddle tunes are all represented, with clearly notated melodies, accurate harmonies and full song texts. At the risk of repeating myself, this is best book of its kind on the market; and whether you like to play for your own amusement, occasionally perform for your friends or play professionally, you *must* own this book.

Senior Moments, Life In Barefoot Bay
Published in Paperback by Vantage Press (07 November, 2000)
Authors: Margaret E. Reiter and Richard Connell

My Grandmother
I read the book because my grandmother is the author. However, if you adore your family and have fond memories of the people in your community then you can appreciate the ancedotes in Senior Moments. Definitely a great gift for grandparents, especially if they live in a community similar to Barefoot Bay.

Good reading for any age, especially parents!
This little book is very heart-warming. It was very relaxing to sit and read for a little each night. The author's description of the wild-fires in Florida were amazing.

I also enjoyed the chapter on schools. It brought back memories of my school days. The last paragraph will make you cry... with glee. "...So how are your schools these days?"

I recommend everyone read the book.

NOT ONLY FOR SENIORS!
Wonderful! I couldn't put it down. Everyone should read this. The author's love and compassion for people comes through. She helps you see the humor in everyday situations. She helped me to appreciate and be thankful for everything just like it is. Not to take life too seriously and to live life to the fullest and have fun! Most of all she gave me the idea that I never have to grow up no matter how old I get. This is a MUST read for all ages. Live, laugh, and enjoy! Congratulations Margaret.

Sky Rocket: The Story of a Little Bay Horse

The story I couldn't forget...
For years I've read everything I could get my hands on. (That included my mom's copy of the Clan of the Cave Bear in third grade and Homer's Iliad in 5th grade!) I came across this story while systematically working my way through the middle school library and fell in love. I read it over and over again through middle school, and then forgot about it for a little while... but as a upperclassman in high school, I started to yearn for it again. I even thought about convincing my brother to check it out and "lose it"! ;-) I highly recommend that you read this book. Trust me, I've read just about every kind of book... and this one is really special. There's something about a beautiful, simple story about a special horse overcoming the odds that just rings true. "Sky Rocket" definately ranks among my all-time favorites.

Great book!
I read Sky Rocket when I was young. I had no idea it was based on a true story! It was one of the best books ever written!

Sky Rocket: The Story of a little Bay Horse
This is one of my favorite horse books. I ride and all of the circumstances about Madison Square Garden are similar to real life. I find this book facinating and love it a lot. I wish it was still in print, it's a loss to the equestrian world and everyone else that it isn't.

It's the best Thai cookbook I have ever come across. The dishes come out like in a restaurant and the instructions are easy to understand and follow. What more could u ask for?!

Authenticly Delicious
If you are looking to cook amazing Thai food and wish to impress your family and friends.... You MUST buy this book. The steps are easy to follow with some illustrations. Plenty of colored pictures. Definately worth buying!!!

A base for creativity
I have had this book for ages. I even brought it with me 6 years ago when I moved to Thailand. Actually, I bought it after eating at the restaurant in Manly, Sydney. It's a great book to get a feel for what it is to "cook Thai". After you've got that feeling, you can use it as a springboard for creative Thai cooking. After you've served your dishes to your friends, they'll say two words..."aroy maak!" (very delicious!) Just buy it!

The Best Book Ever.
This is the best book I ever read because of the pictures. The pictures and the colors are very beautiful because they are light and dark. This book is great.

my kids love this one
I think that it is very rare nowadays to come across a book that be as entertaining as it is educational. my kids love this book for the entertaining qualities, and i love it for the latter.

Warmly drawn illustrations take you through the seasons
My 20 month old daughter and I enjoy looking through this book at the beautiful paintings. I am sure she will love it for a long time to come. The author did a wonderful job describing each month of the year and what was special about it for a certain animal. Very nice!

Meet Naiche: A Native Boy from the Chesapeake Bay Area (My World-Young Native Americans Today Series)
Published in Hardcover by Beyond Words Publising (December, 2002)
Authors: Gabrielle Tayac and John Harrington
Average review score:

Native Boy Tale Charms Kids of All Cultures
Naiche is described so stirringly in this book by Dr. Tayac that any native or non-native American would want to know him. Many American children in 2002 grow up multi-culturally and this wonderfully written children's book clearly evokes a compelling portrait of Naiche's world. The richness of Naiche's Indian culture will expand the horizons of any child who reads this page turner.

Finally, an accurate view of today's Native American
This is a timely book, especially with the typical flurry of Native American activities that start in November in schools around the nation. One of the best qualities of this book is that it shows that Naiche is like any other American boy: has a family, lives in a house, eats pizza, plays soccer, and wears cargo pants. Native Americans are still the subject of stereotypes fueled by many aspects of society. For example, sports team mascots that reinforce people's ignorance. This book goes a long way toward showing that Native children have the same dreams and needs as all of our children.

This is a beautifully written and photographed book that should be on every teacher's reading list, public library, and family bookshelves.

Much Needed Resource for East Coast
Having seen an advance copy of this extremely informative and enjoyable book, I can urge teachers and parents looking for entertaining material on how Native Americans in the East live today to buy this book. It tells the story of a multi-tribal boy and his daily life. Dr. Tayac has an engaging writing style and the history and culture are presented in a very accessible manner.

Mike Gardner's Fish Have No Hands: Catching Tons of Fish in Bays and Estuaries
Published in Paperback by Galt Publishing (April, 1997)
Authors: Mike Gardner, Michael Gardner, and Craig Incardone
Average review score:

How to do the bay right
Mike's book is very thorough--perfect for novices with little prior knowledge. Good for more accomplished anglers, too. I've fished Newport bay a lot and found numerous tips and pieces of advice to help me be even more productive there. Even after several readings, I continued to find new bits of important info about targeting bay bass. There are still a few questions I have but I'm sure I'll get those answered in person at Fred Hall or if I book a trip with him. I did find a few sections a little long on subjects that I feel didn't need that much attention. Overall, a very comprehesive, easy read.

You need to read
I once met Mike at a local fishing show, and believe me, he's not lying when he says he can catch 200-300 fish in one day with the technique listed in this book.

EXCELLENT
IF YOU SEE THE FISH BUT THEY JUST WON'T BITE MAYBE YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. EXCELLENT HOW TO BOOK.

Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to San Francisco and the Bay Area: Including San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley, and Palo Alto
Published in Paperback by First Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Michael Bower and Ruth Rayle
Average review score:

BEWARE SOME OF THE INFO!!
I just moved to San Francisco, and this book was extremely helpful. However, to those about to move, I urge you to skip the Movers section. I hired one of their recommended movers: One Big Man & One Big Truck. The book said they could move a 1 BR in 1 1/2 hours. HA!!! AFTER they tore up my $4,000 sofa, then tried to lie and say the hole had been there all along, it took them 3 hours to move HALF the apartment (and of course, only moved the lightest items first, even though we TOLD them we only needed help with the heavy objects), until my husband finally told them to take off. THEN the owner dared to insinuate that we were liars, his employees NEVER lie, etc., and to minimize our damage by saying "Hey, a $4,000 sofa is no big deal to me, I deal with them every day." We're still trying to resolve this mess a month later, and every time I look at the sofa, my blood boils. BEWARE.

A Must-Have
This book is something everyone moving to San Francisco should have. It covers everything from descriptions of the neighborhoods to what to include in an earthquake kit. Internet addresses and phone numbers to banks, rental agencies, and just about anything else you can think of are included. I used the book a lot before I arrived and am using it just as much, if not more, after making the move. I highly recommend it.

EVERYTHING
This book has so much info. A good book to help you anticipate your move!

San Francisco Bay Area School Ratings
Published in Paperback by Apollo School Guides (October, 1997)
Author: Mark Mastracci
Average review score:

A VERY GOOD REFERNCE and RESOURCE!!!
Since we are new to San Francisco, I find that this is a very good reference for me to pick a good public school in my neighborhood. This provide you with a summary of public school in your county and the rankings of each individual school by their test scores, school award winners.
I find it very useful in helping me to locate a good public school for my son but I hope it can also provide information of private school so as to make to list complete.

The book is very helpful for families that must relocate.
Uprooting a young family is a traumatic experience no matter how many times one has done it before. We are relocating to the West coast from Maryland. Locating the right house in the right neighborhood translates to finding the "right" schools for your children. It is difficult to find comprehensive information about schools when you live far away. I daresay it is difficult for local residents as well. This is a personal decision that one doesn't always want to share with outsiders, even co-workers. Advice from real estate people or school administrators is not always objective. It is difficult to know what questions to ask and what facts to compare. The book gave me an effective roadmap for this important decision. It helped me overcome one difficult hurdle.

Great Book . . . Extremely Useful!
This book gives you a tremendous amount of valuable information about Bay Area schools. Anyone looking for a home in the San Francisco area should definitely buy it!

Turnbull Bay: A Traditional Vampire Story
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (04 January, 2001)
Author: Liberty
Average review score:

Good Deal!
I read this book some time ago and enjoyed it. I found it to be a smooth read with its vampire, Karl Braun, a vampire having little use for mortal humans. Pain is his game and he knows it well. Good book.

Vampire Tales
I'm glad that I purchased and read this novel. I found the characters to hold values that we all need and wish we had. What I liked the most was the way the characters first dealt witht the murders, not wanting to accept that the thing causing them could really exist. One character even thought the vampire was a an insane groupie-like pretending that he's a vampire.

Also, I felt the pain of the characters as they lost precious things to the vampire as the novel progresses.
This novel is definitely worth reading.

Evil Vampires!
I like this novel a lot. Its realism impressed me. Unlike other novels where the characters seems to accept the existence of vampires, these characters had to be convinced. One was suspicious, but he thought the vampire was putting on, or playing games. And the vampire in this novel has normal sexual urges as if human, but a very warped human. To this vampire, sex is a sideline predator thing exceeded only by his need for blood to survive. The vampire doesn't sympathize with the human race. He knows he can't afford to. His mental powers are awesome and he uses them effectively to defeat his enemies. He doesn't like to just kill, he likes to torture his victims with sick mindgames first. I couldn't stop reading Turnbull Bay once I started.
